Unusual Vintage Catholic Monastic-Style Prayer Beads 

Oh, this is an interesting one. ❤️

This beautiful old devotional piece was found while Treasure hunting at an antique fair in Bouckville, New York. Walt had grabbed a few of our kiddos to go Treasure hunting with him that day...and this is one of the unusual pieces they brought home. ❤️

We were told these were “monks’ prayer beads” — a large rosary meant to hang in a room. And while they certainly have the structure of a Catholic rosary, they are not your ordinary rosary!

Measuring approximately 3 FEET LONG, this striking devotional piece is made primarily of wonderfully ornate carved wooden beads, each with beautiful old-world detailing.

The main loop contains five traditional decades, but there is also an unusual group of six additional smaller beads preceding the decades. Even more interesting is the lower portion. Rather than the familiar introductory arrangement found on a standard rosary, this piece has a wooden heart-shaped center accented with a tiny colorful inset, followed by additional carved and contrasting beads.

At the end hang a beautiful Miraculous Medal and small Crucifix.

Large rosaries and prayer beads have historically been used and displayed in Catholic religious life, including examples associated with religious communities and religious habits. We cannot document that this particular piece actually belonged to a monk, so we won't make that claim. However, it came to us with an old handwritten identification describing it as:

“Large rosary made of carved wooden beads — To hang in a room — Monks prayer beads.”

That original handwritten note will accompany the Treasure. ❤️

The unusual configuration makes its exact devotional history something of a mystery...and quite frankly, that's part of what I love about these old Catholic Treasures. Someone owned this. Someone treasured it. Perhaps someone prayed with it. And now, after all these years, it was sitting at an antique fair in little old Bouckville, NY, waiting for Walt and a few Cukierski kiddos to come along Treasure hunting. 😊

It remains in vintage, devotional-used condition, showing the age, wear and patina one would expect from an older religious piece. We have left everything exactly as we received it.
